Technical Analysis Basics for Crypto
Technical analysis (TA) is the study of price movements and patterns to forecast future direction. While TradeGame shows you current prices and 24h changes, understanding TA concepts helps you make better timing decisions.
Support and Resistance
Support — A price level where buying pressure tends to prevent further decline. Think of it as a floor.
Resistance — A price level where selling pressure tends to prevent further advance. Think of it as a ceiling.
When a coin repeatedly bounces off $50,000 and fails to break $55,000, $50K is support and $55K is resistance. A break above resistance often signals further upside; a break below support often signals further downside.
Trend Direction
The simplest and most important concept:
Uptrend — Higher highs and higher lows. Price is generally moving up.
Downtrend — Lower highs and lower lows. Price is generally moving down.
Sideways — Price oscillates in a range. No clear direction.
The saying "the trend is your friend" exists for a reason. Trading with the trend has better odds than trading against it.
Common Patterns
Double bottom — Price hits a low, bounces, hits the same low again, then rallies. Bullish reversal signal.
Double top — Opposite of double bottom. Price hits a high twice then falls. Bearish reversal signal.
Breakout — Price moves above resistance or below support with increased volume. Often signals a new trend.
Moving Averages
A moving average smooths out price data over a period (e.g., 50 days, 200 days):
• Price above its moving average = generally bullish
• Price below its moving average = generally bearish
• When a shorter MA crosses above a longer MA = "golden cross" (bullish)
• When a shorter MA crosses below a longer MA = "death cross" (bearish)
A Word of Caution
TA is not a crystal ball. It describes probabilities, not certainties. Combine it with risk management and you have a solid foundation. Use TradeGame to practice identifying these patterns in real time without risking real money.
